Chesham United's game against Redditch Town was abandoned after a player hit the referee.
The match kicked off at 3pm at Chesham's ground in Amy Lane, Chesham. Chesham United were one nil up in the second half when McKenzie gave away a penalty.
Football fan Andy Gadsby was at the game. He said, "The player had been agitated for a lot of the game. The ref went to give him a card and he swung a punch at him. He (the referee) then sat down, more out of shock I think at what had just happened.
"It was just totally bizarre and incredibly sad to see. Local football should be about taking the family and having a good afternoon. We don't want to see violence like this on the pitch. It doesn't give a very good message to kids. They should learn you have to respect the ref and the decisions they make."
@ClaretWhine said on Twitter, "Unbelievable, never seen anything like it."
Redditch Town has released the following statement on their website."Within minutes of the incident the Club canceled the players registration and has stated that he will never play for the Club again.
"We pride ourselves on fair play and will not tolerate this kind of behaviour. The team has worked very hard over the past few weeks and we will not let this one individual tarnish the reputation of our much loved Club."
It was decided that the game should be abandoned, much to the annoyance of the crowd who had paid £9 for adult entry.
Police were also called to the ground where it is believed the player involved in the assault was spoken to.
It has not yet been announced whether the match will be replayed or the score will stand.
Were you at the game today? What do you think? Should the game have continued with a new referee or was it the right decision to abandon the game?
