Chiltern District Council and Dogs Trust are urging dog owners to pick up their poop and help clean up our public spaces, including Lowndes Park, for a great summer outdoors.

While the majority of dog owners are responsible and pick up after their dog, a careless few are still giving dogs a bad name, and each year thousands of complaints are received by local authorities about dog mess.

Littering our parks, pavements and public spaces, dog poop is a problem which Chiltern District Council is determined to tackle.

Dogs Trust, the UK's largest dog welfare charity, and Chiltern District Council are urging all dog owners to be responsible and 'Bag it and Bin it' during National Poop Scoop week, which runs from July 26 to August 1.

Cleaning up after your dog is simple and the only way of ensuring a summer free from the nuisance of pooch poop.

GRAB IT, BAG IT AND BIN IT is a simple plan to follow...

GRAB IT - Always keep a supply of plastic bags near your dog's lead - supermarket carrier bags make great poop scoops - so you don't forget to take a poop scoop with you on every walk. Simply insert your hand in the plastic bag and pick up your dogs waste. It's easy and not as bad as you think.

BAG IT - Carefully turn the plastic bag inside out and your dogs mess will then be 'bagged'.

BIN IT - Dispose of your bag in a 'Poop' bin. Contrary to popular belief, dog waste can also be put into a public litter bin if a specific dog waste bin is not provided.

Failing to pick up after your dog in Chiltern can result in a fine of up to £1,000.

Ok I get why people complain, esp if you don't have or like dogs but £1k fine!!?? That seems a bit disproportionate to the inconvenience it causes, no? Do you know you can buy nappies for dogs? http://tinyurl.com/2v73jj8 It's cruel and bizarre, I'd rather step over a few poops...

Top tip Alice, thank you! There really is no reason to leave the mess behind. I know some people use nappy bags, they even smell nice!!!

I disagree that supermarket bags make good poop scoops- they have holes in them! I think it's better to buy proper poop bags, you can even get eco-friendly ones these days. I got a bag dispenser for a few quid from a pet shop -it attaches to the lead so you never forget to take the poop bags with you on a walk.
