Hi all - after some advice please!

My wife and I are planning to move to Chesham quite soon from the East side of London - we like the Chesham area, it's affordable for us, and it's closer to the motorway links heading up North where our parents live. We're still however having doubts about the long commute into London and whether or not we'd get completely fed-up with it!

Where we currently live isn't very nice at all and not a great place to raise a family, but at present I only have a 25 minute commute into work and my wife's commute is only about 35 minutes. From Chesham the commute for us both will be about 1.5 hours - give or take 10 mins depending on the walk from home to the station.

So my question is, is the commute worth it? And is it something we'll eventually get used to? Also, how reliable are the tubes from/to Chesham?

If there is any other advise or tips you can give us that would also be great!

Thank you!

The trains take about 50 minutes into Baker Street as I am sure you have seen. It isn't a bad service, no worse than any other Tube line.
Some people drive to Chalfont at Latimer and then get a Chiltern Line train which is only 35 minutes to Marylebone.
I know plenty of people who commute every day and while I guess they don't love it, they get by ok! a good opportunity for a nap, getting on at Chesham at least means you get a seat!
Chesham is a great place to live with lots going on. If you have any further questions about places to live etc please feel free to ask.

Can you give us an idea of how much you are hoping to spend on your new home?

Hi, my wife and I moved out to Chesham 3.5 years ago from Crouch End in London, where my daily commute was about 45 mins by bicycle. We both commute daily on the met line into London, me to Liverpool Street the good lady to Aldgate. Door to desk is about 1.25 for me including the drive down from the top of Chartridge Lane. I don't mind the commute at all, weekends in Chesham/Chilterns more than compensates for that. I find the earlier the train the more reliable, so tend to catch the 630 from Chesham which gets me to my desk at 745. The service is fairly reliable, the return trip in rush hour tends to be less reliable than the journey in, on a couple of occasions it has been very late.
On balance, love life out here, some of the pubs are fantastic and are generally child friendly to pop in for lunch at the weekend.

Bit of advice, cycling around about the Chilterns is great, if you haven't got bikes already, would recommend you get a couple.

Regarding your question of where to live:
As with anywhere, there are better areas than others. I wouldn't like to be specific in print and offend people, but when you visit Chesham next, take sometime to ask people. The people here are very friendly and if you ask a few, you will soon get a picture of what would suit you.
We moved into the area 18 years ago from North London and have brought our children up here and are still very happy to live in Chesham.
Good luck with your house hunting.
